# CA Foundation Paper 3 Strategy

Paper 3 is officially **Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and Statistics** — three subjects, one paper, 100 marks. The mistake most students make is treating it as one subject.

The split (recent attempts, indicative)

What each section actually rewards

Business Maths — formulas + speed

  • Ratio, proportion, indices, logarithms.
  • Time value of money: SI, CI, PV, FV, annuities, EMI.
  • Permutations, combinations, sequences, series.
  • Strategy: — memorise the 20 core formulas. Drill 50 problems per topic.

    • Logical Reasoning — practice over theory

  • Coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, syllogisms, seating arrangements, number/letter series.
  • No formulas. — Pure pattern recognition + careful reading.
  • Strategy: — solve 10 questions a day for 30 days. By day 30, your brain pattern-matches automatically.

    • Statistics — formulas + interpretation

  • Central tendency (mean / median / mode), dispersion (range / SD / CV), correlation, regression, index numbers, time series.
  • Strategy: — master the formula sheet. Then drill 30 questions per chapter to build speed.

    • Time allocation for prep (3 months)

  • Weeks 1–4: Business Maths foundations (ratio, indices, log, SI/CI).
  • Weeks 5–8: Time value of money + permutations/combinations + sequences.
  • Weeks 9–10: Logical Reasoning daily drills.
  • Weeks 11–12: Full Statistics + revision.

    • During the exam (2-hour paper)

    The paper is 2 hours, 100 MCQs. Average ~72 seconds per MCQ.

  • First sweep (60 min): — answer everything you're sure of. Skip anything that takes >90 seconds.
  • Second sweep (40 min): — tackle skipped questions. Eliminate options before guessing.
  • Last 20 min: — OMR verification + last attempts.

    • Common pitfalls

  • Spending 5 minutes on one LR puzzle. — No question is worth 5 minutes in a 72-second-budget paper. Skip and return.
  • Memorising LR "shortcuts" you don't fully understand. — Shortcuts only work when you know why they work.
  • Ignoring negative marking. — Paper 3 has 0.25 negative marking — guess only when you've eliminated 2+ options.

    • Paper 3 has the highest score-distribution variance of all four papers. Plan it well and 80+ is reachable. Plan it badly and you'll struggle to clear 40.
