# CA Foundation Paper 1 Accounting: Complete Strategy

Paper 1 — **Principles and Practice of Accounting** — is the paper where most toppers separate themselves. It's **descriptive** (not MCQ), carries 100 marks, and good handwriting + clean presentation easily adds 8–10 marks.

Chapter-wise weightage (approximate, based on recent attempts)

Partnership and Company Accounts together = 38% of the paper. If you can't solve these two cold, you cannot score 60+.

Must-solve chapters (non-negotiable)

  • **Partnership Accounts** — admission, retirement, death, dissolution. Garner vs Murray rule. Know the sacrificing vs gaining ratio dance.
  • **Company Accounts** — share issue (with premium/discount), forfeiture, reissue, debentures. Section 52 uses of Securities Premium.
  • **Final Accounts** — adjustments for outstanding, prepaid, accrued, depreciation, bad debts provision.

    • Question pattern

  • 6 questions, attempt 5.
  • Q1 is compulsory — usually 20 marks, includes theory + practical.
  • Each other question = 20 marks.
  • No negative marking — attempt everything.

    • 12-week plan

  • Weeks 1–3: — Framework, Accounting Process, Trial Balance, Depreciation, Bank Reconciliation.
  • Weeks 4–6: — Partnership (all 4 scenarios). Solve 15+ full problems.
  • Weeks 7–8: — Company Accounts.
  • Weeks 9–10: — Final Accounts, Incomplete Records, Not-for-Profit.
  • Weeks 11–12: — ICAI past papers + RTP/MTP, full-length mocks.

    • The presentation edge

    In Paper 1, a clean working note scores more than a right final answer with no workings. Always show:

  • Opening + closing balance calculations
  • Journal entries with narrations
  • Working notes referenced by number (WN1, WN2…)

    • Common traps

  • Mixing up **sacrificing** (admission) and **gaining** (retirement) ratio.
  • Forgetting **Joint Life Policy** treatment on dissolution.
  • Using PSR instead of capital ratio under **Garner vs Murray** for insolvent partners.

    • Fix these three and you're already above 60% of the candidate pool.
