# How to Write Paper 1 Descriptive Answers

Paper 1 — Principles and Practice of Accounting — is **descriptive** (not MCQ). That's good news: presentation alone can add 8–10 marks.

Here's the format that consistently lifts scores.

The four-block answer structure

For every question, structure your answer in this order:

  • **Working notes** (numbered: WN1, WN2, ...).
  • **The required statement / account / journal entries**.
  • **Final figure presented clearly** (boxed or underlined).
  • **Notes/assumptions** (if any non-standard treatment).
  • This structure tells the examiner: I know the steps, the standard, and the answer.

    Working notes — the hidden score booster

  • A wrong final answer with **correct workings** can score 60% of marks.
  • A right final answer with **no workings** typically scores 40%.
  • Work backwards from this: even if you're stuck, write whatever workings you can.
  • Journal entry format

    Use the exact ICAI format:

    ```
    Date Particulars L.F. Dr. (₹) Cr. (₹)
    2026 Cash A/c Dr. 10,000
    To Sales A/c 10,000
    (Being cash sales recorded)
    ```

    What matters:

  • The word **Dr.** at the end of the debit account name.
  • Indented credit account, prefixed with **To**.
  • A narration in parentheses — even a 5-word one.
  • L.F. column can be blank in the exam — that's expected.
  • Account format

  • Date / Particulars / J.F. / Amount on each side.
  • Clearly mark **Dr.** (left) and **Cr.** (right) at the top.
  • Total both sides on the same line at the bottom.
  • For Capital A/c, Cash A/c, Bank A/c — show closing balance with **By Balance c/d** on the side that's short.
  • Balance Sheet format

    Follow the **vertical format** prescribed under Schedule III if asked. For sole proprietor, the simple horizontal Liabilities | Assets format is acceptable.

    Five quick wins

  • **Always show units** — ₹ symbol (or `Rs.`), not just numbers.
  • **Underline the final answer** — examiners scan for this.
  • **Use rough work pages provided**, not the answer book, for scratch calculations.
  • **Double-line ruling** for totals in tables. Looks professional.
  • **Don't strike out aggressively** — one diagonal line is enough. Heavy strikeouts look messy.
  • What examiners hate

  • Pages full of dense unbroken paragraphs (use bullets / structure).
  • No working notes for numerical answers.
  • Multiple final answers without clear indication of which is the final.
  • Crossing out half a page after deciding to retry.
  • The paper doesn't reward only knowledge — it rewards **clarity of presentation**. Two students with the same conceptual grasp can score 15 marks apart based purely on how they laid out their answers.
