CA Foundation Exam Day Strategy: What to Do Before, During & After Each Paper
The Night Before
Your preparation is already done by this point. The night before the exam is about consolidation, not cramming. Review your section charts and formula sheets for 60-90 minutes maximum. Pack your admit card, ID proof, stationery (blue and black pens, pencil, ruler, calculator for Paper 3 and 4), and a water bottle. Set two alarms and sleep by 10 PM.
Morning Of the Exam
Wake up at least 3 hours before the exam starts. Have a proper breakfast — your brain needs glucose. Reach the exam centre 45 minutes early. Use the waiting time to glance at your one-page revision notes, not to learn new concepts.
The First 15 Minutes (Reading Time)
ICAI gives you 15 minutes of reading time. Use it strategically. Read every question and mentally categorise them: easy (attempt first), moderate (attempt second), and tough (attempt last). For MCQ papers, quickly scan for topics you are strongest in.
During the Exam: Subjective Papers (Paper 1 & 2)
Time Allocation
You have 3 hours for 100 marks. That is 1.8 minutes per mark. A 5-mark question should take 9 minutes at most. Keep a watch on your desk and check your pace every 30 minutes.
Answer Presentation
Start each answer on a fresh page. Write the question number clearly. Use headings and subheadings. Underline key terms and section numbers. For numerical problems, show all workings and label them clearly.
Attempt Order
Start with the question you know best — it settles your nerves and ensures you bank those marks. Then move to high-mark questions. Leave the question you find hardest for last, but always attempt it — even partial answers score marks.
During the Exam: Objective Papers (Paper 3 & 4)
Three-Pass Strategy
**Pass 1 (First 60 minutes)**: Go through all questions sequentially. Answer every question you can solve quickly. Mark uncertain ones on the question paper.
**Pass 2 (Next 45 minutes)**: Return to marked questions. Apply elimination techniques.
**Pass 3 (Final 15 minutes)**: Review your OMR sheet. Ensure every answer is properly bubbled. Check that question numbers match.
OMR Sheet Tips
Fill the OMR sheet in batches of 10-15 questions to save time on switching between question paper and answer sheet. Use only an HB pencil or black ball pen as specified. Never leave stray marks.
After Each Paper
Do not discuss answers with others between papers — it only creates anxiety about things you cannot change. Instead, take a short walk, have a snack, and begin light revision for the next paper. Stay focused on what is ahead, not what is behind.
Stress Management
If you feel overwhelmed during the paper, stop for 30 seconds. Take three deep breaths. Remind yourself that you have prepared, and one tough question does not define your result. Then continue.
